LoveYou Kickboxing's Fly Girl!
First Love You
“To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear”
Beautiful, Helpful, Kind, Sweet, Hell of a right cross! That’s what comes to mind when I think of Donna.
Donna is a nurse on a surgical floor and her job can be physically demanding and stressful at times. Don’t be deceived by her 5 foot stature. Her stamina and power can be felt by the partner holding pads for her!
I had the good fortune to meet Donna at a Muay Thai gym that we both trained out of. Amazing how life works out and many years later she joined LoveYou Kickboxing to train in my class! Donna has amazing technique and an even more amazing attitude! Her smile is contagious and she lifts up the room with her warmth and wonderful energy.
I needed to break out of my rut when it came to working out: running and weight training was becoming monotonous. Having known Cheryl and working with her from the days of Mike Miles National Kickboxing, I knew the instruction would be great. Combining my love of this form of exercise and knowing someone who is experienced in muay thai/kickboxing made the decision to come here a no brainer.
What motivates me to come back is being challenged and never knowing what to expect from class. Whether it's practicing familiar combinations or trying new moves, I love knowing that I can always learn something new, ultimately improving my techniques and challenging what I've become complacent in. For example, I appreciate that Cheryl works both the orthodox and the southpaw stance: it exercises not only the body but the brain, pushing the limits of what our body can do. My job at times can be physically demanding so increasing my muscle and cardiovascular strength makes me less tired and less prone to injuries like shoulder, knee, or back pain.
I love the environment it creates among the women who come to class. They genuinely want to come and work hard and it's awesome to work out with other women who are enthusiastic about kickboxing as I am. I also love that I learn something new about kickboxing techniques like looking at your opponent's collar bone to create a stronger punch. Even though I have practiced before, previous kickboxing classes I've been to did not focus on proper form. Being at LYK makes sure technique is emphasized while incorporating an intense cardiovascular workout.
My advice to any woman who wants to try something new especially kickboxing is try one class. What do you have to lose? Who doesn't want an efficient workout in one hour that will give you an overall body workout, introduce you to great ladies and decrease stress levels by punching something? Our time is precious and I believe that putting aside time to improve our physical and mental health is so beneficial to one's quality of life.
My favorite combination is the left jab, right cross, left upper cut (or left body shot) and right roundhouse. Plus I love elbows! I would use them in any combination, if I could:)
Thank you Donna for loving you and doing what you do!
